The pentagram, or five-pointed star, has been in existence for thousands of years. The pentagram is commonly accepted as a symbol of protection and exorcism, driving away evil and other unwanted energies and entities.

The pentagram in the TV show Supernatural is very similar to what the pentagram represents in religious culture.
In the series Supernatural, the pentagram sign is depicted enclosed in a circle. This symbol is a trap for demons, which does not allow them to get out of the circle. Protection from obsession has a pattern in the form of the sun, inside of which is enclosed a pentagram. They use the pentagram as a form of protection; as they would in religions today.

The pentagram is an incredibly common symbol in many different religions, including Christianity.
Christians thought the pentagram was actually protective, and it was a more common symbol of Christianity than the cross in early times. It was worn on amulets and jewelry. The pentagram actually symbolized Christ himself.
Christian Kabbalists of the renaissance were especially enamored of the pentagram, which they viewed as a mystical proof of the divinity of Christ – to them, it symbolized Christ as the Holy Spirit manifest in the flesh.
